You know, we like to play around music.
Let’s play around with a fun song.
Dion — 1961, his first solo track after leaving the Belmonts — Runaround Sue.
You probably know the tune — it’s catchy. It’s fun. But what does that have to do with restructuring?
In business, as troubled situations develop — hard decisions have to be made. And one of those decisions is, what are you going to do with employees?
So, what are you going to do?
You’ve got to make the hard decisions.
We all have somebody who’s worked with us.
We really like them. We really do enjoy them.
But maybe it’s just time. You’re going to have to cut somebody. Or you’re going to just have to make a choice. To make a change.
So, let’s look at the lyrics:
Here’s my story. It’s hard, but true.
About an employee that I once knew.
She took my trust, then ran around with every customer in town.
Now listen people, what I’m telling you. I keep away from Runaround Sue.
Yeah, I might miss her decks in the quick rapport.
Her month-end sales and quarterly gains.
So, if you don’t want to cry like I do. I’d keep away from Runaround Sue.
[Chorus is being omitted for your sanity!]
She likes to travel around. Yeah, she loves you and she’ll put you down.
Now people, let me put you wise. Sue goes out with other guys.
Come on. Who needs an employee like this?
Here’s the moral of the story from the guy who knows.
I gave my trust and now my sales show.
Ask any fool that she ever knew.
They’ll say: a-keep away from Runaround Sue.
Okay, I am not doing this chorus again.
Runaround Sue. The employee you want to keep away from.
Every company has hard decisions to make. Every company has employees that, when things get tough, they’re going to have to let go.
You’re going to have to make changes.
You’re going to have to optimize the company.
That’s our take on it. A little bit of fun with the song.
We love Dion. It’s a great song. And maybe we can get a lesson out of it. Hope you enjoyed it.
